How to Become a Data Analyst in the UK (No Background Needed)
The short answer
You can become a data analyst without a degree, a maths background, or any previous data job. What you can’t skip is the skills. Learn the core tools, prove you can use them on real projects, and you’ll be in a strong position to apply for junior roles.
The proof is in the job adverts. Only 3.8% of UK permanent data analyst adverts mention a degree, while SQL appears in 42%, Power BI in 35%, and Python in 30%. Employers want analysts who can pull data out of a database, clean it up, make sense of it, and explain it to someone who has to make a decision. The evidence they look for is practical: SQL queries, working dashboards, and finished projects.
That’s good news if you’re coming from retail, hospitality, admin, the armed forces, or a gap after university. Learn the core tools in a sensible order, build a small portfolio, earn a recognised certification or two, then rebuild your CV for junior analyst roles.
Do You Really Need a Degree?
No. A degree is one way in, but it’s far from the only one.
Just 3.8% of permanent UK data analyst adverts in the six months to 8 October 2026 mention a degree, according to IT Jobs Watch. Compare that to the 42% that name SQL and you can see where employers are really looking: at what you can do.
What Do Employers Actually Want?
Skills. These are the ones named most often in permanent UK data analyst adverts:
- SQL: 42%
- Power BI: 35%
- Python: 30%
- Microsoft Excel: 27%
- AI: 23%
- Tableau: 20%
- Microsoft Azure: 19%
- Azure certification: 15%
Remember that soft skills count too. Communication and analytical skills go a long way.
The Route Into Data Analysis, Step by Step
Here’s how it works, and how it lines up with our Data Analyst Career Programme.
1. Start with Excel
Excel is the best start. Learn PivotTables, lookups, formulas, and charts, then move on to dashboards and forecasting. It’s a quick win, and plenty of junior reporting work still runs on spreadsheets.
2. Get to grips with SQL
This is the skill employers ask for most. Start with basic queries, then build up to grouping, joins, filters, and sub-queries, so you can pull exactly the data you need out of a database.
3. Add Python
Python is what you’ll reach for when your data is messy. Learn to import, clean, and visualise data, plus the basics of statistics.
4. Learn to tell the story with dashboards
Numbers only matter if people can understand them. Learn to build dashboards in both Tableau and Power BI, so you can present your findings clearly and feel at home with whichever tool an employer uses.
5. Get certified along the way
A certification shows employers that your skills have been independently tested. On our programme, you’ll earn three Microsoft certifications: PL-300 for Power BI, Azure Data Fundamentals, and AI-900 for Azure AI Fundamentals.
6. Build projects
Get a portfolio of real work. It answers the question every career changer gets asked at an interview: “have you actually done this?”
7. Get your CV ready and start applying
Make sure you present your experience and skills in a way that employers will understand. With our career programme, we’ll help you rebuild your CV and LinkedIn profile, then coach you through applications and interviews.
What Will Your First Job Look Like?
Most people start in a junior role such as junior data analyst or reporting analyst. Pay starts at around £28,000 and can rise to £65,000 with experience. We go into the numbers in Data Analyst Salaries in the UK: What Beginners Can Expect in 2026.
From there, the options open up. You could move into a senior or lead analyst role, manage a data team, go freelance as a consultant, or head towards data science.

Getting You Hired
Finishing the training is only half the journey, so our recruitment team takes over when it ends. You’ll get a full CV rebuild, CV workshops, a LinkedIn profile rewrite, interview coaching, and mock interviews, followed by introductions to our network of employer partners.
It’s all backed by a job guarantee. We’ll find you a job in the industry within six months, or we’ll refund your course fee. You can see the full terms on the programme page.
Take Hal, who joined in June 2025. He had a science degree but was struggling to turn it into interviews. He passed every certification first time and started as a Customer Insight Analyst at Ocado Retail in January 2026. 187 days from starting to being employed. Read Hal’s story.
